Stotfold, a small town situated in the north of Hertfordshire, is thought
to have derived its name from the practice of northern cattle drovers breaking
their journey at this point along the A1 Great North Road and penning their
cattle (stots) in enclosures (folds) before continuing their journeys
southwards. Bedfordshire County Council have found traces of settlements around
the outskirts of today's Stotfold and it is thought that people settled with
their families belongings and animals on land in this area as far back as the
Stone Age, over 4000 years ago.
Stotfold extends over an area of over 2200 acres making this a very large
parish. Present population amounts to over 7,500 people and the beautiful River
Ivel runs through the town.
